ROBERT NELSON is an extraordinary artist whose golden voice is a unique blend of standard jazz tones similar to Joe Williams and Johnny Hartman, with 50’s and 60’s Rat Pack vibrato of Dean Martin and melancholy emotion of Johnny Mathis, 60’s and 70’s soulful jazz reminiscent of Sam Cooke, Lou Rawls and Natalie Cole, as well as more modern and smooth jazz styles of Gregory Porter, Kurt Elling, Will Downing, and Leslie Odom Jr. At the age 8, he was heavily inspired by the likes of Sammy Davis Jr, Vic Damone, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, David Ruffin, Nat King Cole and a very young Michael Jackson of the Jackson 5, yet it was Dean Martin that raised his musical consciousness prompting him to commit to performing. “I was 7 years old on the floor playing with toys and watching an old black and white movie starring Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin. When Dean ascended down the stairs in a black tuxedo singing in that velvet voice, something clicked and I said, that’s what I will to do!” His musical journey started at the age of 8 under the direction and mentorship of Lee Cochran, a premier and well respected pianist in the mid seventies at Washington Tabernacle Baptist Church as a featured soloist on the radio broadcast show. It continued through high school and universities including The Charles Sumner Gospel Choir, The Harris Stowe State University Choir which ultimately landed him a full music scholarship in voice at the prestigious Alabama A&M University Choir where he toured Chicago, St. Louis, Birmingham, and Detroit with the historic choir. ROBERTNELSON moved to New York and continued to perform and ultimately performed at The Apollo Theater and other venues in Manhattan and Uptown. Theater soon followed where he starred in productions of The Wiz, Dreamgirls, A Few Good Men, and Six Degrees of Separation where he won the coveted Wings Award and Twickenham Theater Award for Best Actor in a Drama Today, he continues to write, record and perform music, works as a consultant for the Heal the Arts Jazz Initiative and Intellectual Artist Series and wows audience of all ages at such venues as The Dark Room, The Palladium, Roadhouse 61, The Historic Judson House, The Savoy and private estate events, fundraisers, festivals, lounges, and celebratory events of all kinds.
