Ben Sollee

Kentucky musician and composer Ben Sollee has been pushing musical boundaries for nearly two decades, exemplified in his latest album, "Long Haul" (2024). Drawing from American and global southern influences, Sollee's vocals and unique cello style weave through each track, connecting different chapters of his journey.

After a hiatus from touring following his 2017 album, Sollee focused on family and community in Louisville, KY, now a father of three. He delved into composing, scoring films like "LAND" and "Maggie Morre(s)," and the Peabody-nominated podcast series "Unreformed." Beyond music, Sollee co-founded Canopy, a nonprofit supporting local businesses in Kentucky.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought personal losses, prompting Sollee to reflect deeply, influencing the uplifting tone of "Long Haul." The title track reflects his battle with long-COVID, resonating with themes of resilience and self-discovery.

In crafting the album, Sollee embraced a hands-on approach, emphasizing authenticity over automation, as inspired by Kevin Roose's philosophy. Tracks like "Misty Miles" and "Under the Spell" blend introspection with social commentary, echoing Paul Simon's storytelling prowess.

"One More Day," a heartfelt plea inspired by personal loss, highlights Sollee's emotional depth and musical evolution. Collaborating with artists like Patrick Duke Graney and Grammy-nominated Jason Clayborn, Sollee's vision for "Long Haul" comes alive with vibrant instrumentation and evocative imagery.
